MEMORANDUM

TO:

FROM:

DATE:

SUBJECT:

Mayor and Councilmembers

Mark Boos, Parks/Utilities Coordinator

December 5, 1989

Status Report on Central Park Electrical Cost Study

The week of November 15, 1989 1 met with Anoka Electric Cooperative Specialist, Jerry Bennett,
to analyze our irrigation and field lighting system at 'Central Park. The purpose of this meeting was
to determine ff a Time of Day Meter (off-peak) could provide cost savings to the City.

While the majority of our field lighting and concession stand usage is during peak hours, the
irrigation system is typically operational during off-peak. Peak hours are from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00
p.m.

asked Je.n-y to provide a cost comparison, and the figures used for this purpose are as follows:

Irrigation system

20 KW for 30 HP pump (746 watts times 30 I--IP) - demand charge
5400 KWh per month (30 days at 9 hours/day) - billable usage

Anoka Electric Cooperative is estimating the City could save approximately $1,058.00 per year by
taking advantage of off-peak pricing. This savings would actually be realized over the six month
period the irrigation system is operational. This is an estimate only.

My suggestion at this point would be to obtain three electrical bids for converting our irrigation
system to an off-peak meter and in the spring measure the pump's actual KW rating. At that time
we would have a more accurate estimate of potential savings on elecmical cost and with that, plus
the conversion cost, we could determine a "break-even" time frame.

I plan to obtain the bids and have the report back by the first regular meeting in February,. 1990.
