SMITH: I live ~ere in Ramsay,
too. One of tee things I see is taxes. We're already
seeing cos~ of this aere going on. People's cites are
slashed amd we're having social costs ~nat are going to
De coming up and hearing about the taxes being lost by
these peope that live next door. And I think about taxes
and I see things that cause social problems being taxed.

Alcohol is taxed more taan just a sales tax.
Cigarettes are taxed more ~an just ~ae sales tax. You
guys raise taxes by our property. Put tax on this stuff,
too, just aa leas~ until t~ey get the c~ance to close it
down. Put a tax on it. Put double tax on it. If they
wan= ¢o pay $5 for a magazine, they can pay $10 and pay
$5 to our city so we can deal with the problem i=
creates. I ~nink ~nat if you spen~ a little ~ime
thinking about this it's not ridiculous. You nave got
statistical crime ra~e increases =nat you can loon a~
from these studies and you've got proven costs in your
police enfo~cemen= and your court systems and your jails
and social services costs. It all costs money for
certain crimes. The percentage of those are going ~o go
up and you can come up with a number for it. I don'~
tnin~ it will ta~e much.

MR. HA!~TLE~: Again, this evening, I

ADAMS COURT RMPORTING

(612) 375-9150
