As a surprise to no one, most of our time this winter has been consumed by some form of
snow removal. For some perspective, last winter we had 14 full scale plowings and 20 minor
plowings. Minor events consist of plowing off arterial roads, sanding intersections, knocking back
drifts, etc. To date (Jan. 23r ) we have had 8 full scale plowing events and 22 minor events. The
minor events really eat up resources, such as salt, cutting edges and fuel. People always think of
streets when you talk about snow removal, but PW also has the responsibility of clearing trails,
sidewalks, fire hydrants, the parking ramp, parking lots, and the skating rinks at Central Park,
Ramsey Elementary, and Bear Park. The rinks and trails have been particularly hard to keep on
top of. The high winds keep plugging the trails and sidewalks, which requires that we keep going
over the same areas several times a week. The skating rink maintenance is suffering from the
frequent nuisance snowfalls. It takes a couple of days to clear the rinks of snow, then sweep the
ice surface to prepare them for flooding. Just when we get to that point it snows again and we start
all over! On a positive note, there is only about 3 months left of snow season!
Neither snow, nor rain, nor...... grimly gloom of continued cold stays the Public Works couriers
from the swift completion of their appointed rounds. The near - relentless snow and high winds has
required almost continuous plowing of streets, parking lots, sidewalks and trails of
late. Unfortunately, sometimes there is not enough time to make all the `appointed rounds' on
weekends and clear the skating rinks of the frequent snows. Hardy residents do appreciate the
rinks though, and have cleared the snow themselves more than once this season.
