CASE #4

153RD AVENUE N.W. SPEED LIMIT
By: Steven J. Jankowski, City Engineer

Background:

With the current stretch of 153rd Avenue N.W. between County Road #5 and County Road #56
nearing completion, the City needs to set a realistic and comprehensive speed limit for the entire
street. The new section of 153rd Avenue N.W. is designed for 40 mph and 35 mph on some
curves. The street currently has the following speed limits posted:

Roanoke Street to Highway g47
Highway g47 to County Road #5
County Road #56 to Variolite Street

40 mph
40 mph
50 mph

In order for the City to post new speed limits along the length of 153rd Avenue N.W., it must
request from the Minnesota Department of Transportation a traffic survey. This is required
because 153rd Avenue N.W. was conslructed with MSA funds.

Recommendation:

Authorize the City Engineer to take the necessary steps to have Mn/DOT complete a traffic study to
change the speed limit to 40 mph on 153rd Avenue N.W.

Council Action:

Motion to approve/deny Resolution g91-07- authorizing the City Engineer to request a
traffic study to set the speed limit on 153rd Avenue N.W. to 40 mph.

Review Checklist:

City Adminiswator
City Engineer
Police Chief
Project Manager

CC :07/09/91
