MEMORANDUM

TO:

Mayor James Gilbenson
Councilmember Sheila Beyer
Councilmember Richard Cich
Councilmember Glen Hardin
Councilmember Kenneth Pcterson

FROM:

Mark Boos, Parks/Utilities Coordinator
Park and Recreation Commission

DATE: July 23, 1991

RE:

Public Facility Naming, Specifically Rabbit Park

In keeping with the Park and Recreation Commission's Public Facility Naming Policy adopted by
City Council (Resolution g01-06-138), the naming of this park comes before City Council because
the name selected by the Park and Recreation Commission is different than the name of the
subdivision that contains it.

April 11 Park and Recreation Commission meeting: After recommending the aforementioned
naming policy to City Council, the Commission chose the name Rabbit Park for the five acre park
bordering on and west of Rabbit Stxeet N.W. in the northwest comer of Sorteberg's 6th Addition.
The naming of this park had been tabled by the Commission twice before. The consensus was not
to have a subdivision specific name for this park primarily because the park would also
accommodate the needs of the residents of Countryside Estates and Windsorwood Addition. The
Commission sought citizen involvement in naming the park for over a year at various City
functions, and a suggestion box remained in the commons at City Hall until April 1 lth of this year.
several dozen names were received.

Out of convenience, some City Staff members had been referring to the park in Sorteberg's 6th
Addition as Countryside Estates Park, although Rabbit Park is the name now being used by
residents and staffers alike.

As City Council is aware, the City does own park property in Countryside Estates (south portion
of what was Outlot B, 175th Lane N.W. and Xerxes Street N.W.). That parcel is currently being
used as a nursery site for conifers.

Enclosed for your review:

Resolution ~ 1-06-138
Site Location

]jmt

CC: 08/13/91

45'
