UNIVERSITY OF INNESOTA
Twin Cities Campus
February 5, 2014
Re: Beekeeping Permit for Beth Edwards
To Whom It May Concern:
Department of Entomology
College of Food, Agricultural and
Natural Resource Sciences
219 Hodson Hall
1980 Folwell Avenue
St. Paul, MN 55108-6125
612-624-3636
Fax: 612-625-5299
I am writing to supplement the beekeeping application for Beth Edwards who resides at 16101
Tumberry Turn NW in Ramsey. Beth Edwards is participating in Bee Squad's Hive to Bottle
Program that is operated via the University of Minnesota's Bee Lab. The Bee Squad is an
organization that helps beekeepers and bee supporters in the greater Twin Cities area foster healthy
bee populations. Participants in the Hive to Bottle Program own the bees and equipment while a
UMN Bee Squad Beekeeper (trained via the University of Minnesota Beekeeping in Northern
Climates Short Course and extensive U of MN field instruction) manages their hive throughout the
season.
Beth Edwards will have one honey bee colony. If the colony successfully overwinters, it will be
divided into two colonies in 2015. We will maintain a separate water source (bucket filled partially
with water and a landing space for bees). The bees will be housed in new Langstroth style removable
frame equipment. The colony will be managed to prevent swarming and to promote honey bee
health; these practices will include removing any unused comb and following acceptable practices
that prevent robbing. When present, surplus honey will be harvested regularly throughout the
summer and fall months. A Bee Squad Beekeeper will inspect the colony every 7 to 14 days from
May through October of 2014 and periodically through the winter months as deemed necessary.
Please contact me with any questions regarding the management and location of Beth Edward's
honey bees.
Regards,
Rebecca Mastennan, Ph.D.
Bee Squad Coordinator
beesquad@umn.edu
612-624-8989
