CASE #2

BUSINESS VISITATIONS
By: Project Manager James Gromberg

Background:

'D~c: Economic Development Commission (EDC) has considered in the past the regular visitation of
4, .~ ,, ~ :~usinesses to find out what problems and advantages they find as they conduct business in
rhc City of Ramsey. The EDC has been unable in the past to agree on a program and format for
these visits. City Code requires that the EDC submit a yearly report to the City Council on the
activities it has completed and attempted during the preceding year. This report should also contain
suggestions as to how the City Council may best improve the local business climate.

The EDC should plan that the EDC members visit random businesses and not only those in which
the are acquainted with the leaders.

The Commission should also decide on a fom~ for the interview and/or meeting. I have attached a
sample form for the visitations. This form is only a draft and may be changed as the EDC sees fit.
The visits and interviews need to be fairly standard in content and length to get a good idea on the
problems facing the business community.

I have also attached a list of the businesses that participated in the 1991 EXPO Survey. Some of
these businesses are also interested in the formation of a Business Association and should be
concentrated on to encourage interest.

Recommendation:

Based on discussion, develop and implement a plan for Commissioners to visit local businesses.
The Commission will need to develop a schedule for the visitation of the local businesses.

Review Checklist:

City Engineer
Project Manager

EDC:05-08/9 !
