City of Ramsey 2030 Comprehensive Plan <br />Appendix A: Community Background <br />Housing Conditions in Ramsey and Nearby Communities <br />Age of Housing Stock <br />In 2000 Ramsey had one of the youngest housing stocks compared to its developing neighbors, with <br />nearly 90 percent of its homes being less than 30 years old (Figure 3-12). This is attributed in part to the <br />substantial amount of new housing construction that has occurred in Ramsey over the last 30 years <br />compared to neighboring communities and the lack of a historic village center with significant number of <br />homes that predate World War II. <br />Among neighboring communities, Anoka has by far the oldest housing stock. As of 2000, more than 97 percent of Ramseys' households <br />were in owner -occupied units. There also is limited rental housing in communities to the north of <br />Ramsey or immediately across the Mississippi River. This is largely because these communities do not <br />have water and sewer infrastructure to support multifamily housing. However, along Highway 10 <br />southeast of Ramsey in Anoka and Coon Rapids, as well as to the northwest in Elk River, there are <br />substantial concentrations of rental housing. This is largely because Anoka and Elk River developed <br />initially as freestanding communities that regularly constructed rental housing to meet the needs of a <br />small but growing employment base. <br />City of Ramsey 2030 Comprehensive Plan Appendix A-19 <br />
