Councilmember Riley raised the option of aligning the crosswalk with Iodine Street rather than
Helium Street. He noted that would separate the crosswalks to a greater degree.
Chairperson Backous stated crosswalks are not that big of a deal and this is a densely populated
neighborhood so he supports installing two crosswalks. He suggested putting a second
crosswalk at Geranium Street, which is farther east than Helium Street.
Mr. Hirschman stated children use 152nd Way/Krypton Terrace when walking to school instead
of using the trail. He stated it is posted at 45 mph but you can easily top the hill at 70 mph.
Councilmember Kuzma asked if there are patrols of this area.
Mr. Hirschman stated sometimes a patrol will sit by his driveway.
Chairperson Backous stated if children are using 152nd Way, it would make sense to locate the
second crosswalk at Geranium Street.
Public Works Superintendent Riemer stated after the Study, the crosswalk may move closer to
Helium Street since traffic would no longer stop at Highway 5.
Chairperson Backous stated this area is developing so the density will increase. He stated he has
been told the children walk to school and often use the trails and he does not think it would be a
wrong decision to add two marked crosswalks.
City Engineer Westby advised that construction will start no earlier than September of this year
and by the end of the year, the signal system at Nowthen Boulevard NW and Alpine Drive NW
will be completed.
Chairperson Backous stated the crosswalks could be funded from the land sale proceeds.
Councilmember Riley preferred one crosswalk at Helium Street.
Chairperson Backous stated that may not be a bad idea if the children are using 152nd Way so he
could support that option.
Motion by Councilmember Riley, seconded by Councilmember Kuzma, to recommend that the
City Council not construct the trail connection north of Alpine Drive between Nowthen
Boulevard and Krypton Street and to locate a crosswalk at Helium Street.
Motion carried. Voting Yes: Chairperson Backous, Councilmembers Riley and Kuzma. Voting
No: None.
Chairperson Backous asked staff to provide additional information when this is presented to the
Council relating to costs and crosswalk signalization options.
Public Works Committee / April 15, 2014
