Board Member Lewis stated that perhaps the Board should focus on one or two items during the
year instead of spreading themselves too thin in order to make a larger impact.
Acting Chairperson Bentz referenced past Work Plans and noted that although small items, like
the tree sale and environmental expo, are included on the Plan, those items do not take as long
and the focus usually is on one or two items during the year.
Acting Chairperson Bentz referenced issues that he was unsure makes sense under City Code.
Board Member Lewis confirmed that the Board would like to include an item titled establish and
enhance landscaping guidelines for the City on the Work Plan.
City Planner Anderson confirmed that landscaping guidelines and irrigation standards could be
placed on the Work Plan as the main items the Board will focus on for the next year.
Board Member Lewis questioned how the results of those items could be measured and believed
that quantifiable items should be included as well as a timeline so that results can be seen. He
referenced the idea of increasing recycling or reducing the amount of energy used by the City.
Acting Chairperson Bentz stated that some items, such as the tree sale and expo, remain the same
on the Work Plan. He questioned if the newsletter and QCTV items should be removed from the
Plan.
Board Member Lewis stated that perhaps if there is a singular focus on the Work Plan it would
be valuable to have television and newsprint assistance. He noted that the focus of those items
may change to garner support for the focused item.
City Planner Anderson referenced the idea of recycling participation and noted that would be a
great idea for the Work Plan, advising that he does have a budget for recycling that could be used
to promote the message.
Board Member Valentine agreed that the QCTV and newspaper items could be listed on the
Work Plan with the understanding that those items are tools and not a focus on their own.
Board Member Hiatt referenced the idea of water conservation and stated that while initially that
concept is not measurable, he still believes that it is an important topic the Board should focus
on. He stated that perhaps that could be the second item on the Work Plan.
City Planner Anderson confirmed Board consensus on the main items of the Work Plan being
listed as recycling and water conservation, with the inclusion of the tree sale and environmental
expo as well as the QCTV and newspaper items to continue. He questioned if the Board would
still like to include the additional discussion point of the viability of the Board.
Acting Chairperson Bentz stated that perhaps the Board should gauge the reaction of the Council
to this Work Plan before deciding whether to pose that question.
City Planner Anderson strongly encouraged all Members be available to attend the worksession
with the Council, noting that he will alert the Board to the exact date as soon as possible.
Environmental Policy Board / June 2, 2014
Page 5 of 6
