Board Member Lewis stated that perhaps the Board should focus on one or two items during the <br />year instead of spreading themselves too thin in order to make a larger impact. <br />Acting Chairperson Bentz referenced past Work Plans and noted that although small items, like <br />the tree sale and environmental expo, are included on the Plan, those items do not take as long <br />and the focus usually is on one or two items during the year. <br />Acting Chairperson Bentz referenced issues that he was unsure makes sense under City Code. <br />Board Member Lewis confirmed that the Board would like to include an item titled establish and <br />enhance landscaping guidelines for the City on the Work Plan. <br />City Planner Anderson confirmed that landscaping guidelines and irrigation standards could be <br />placed on the Work Plan as the main items the Board will focus on for the next year. <br />Board Member Lewis questioned how the results of those items could be measured and believed <br />that quantifiable items should be included as well as a timeline so that results can be seen. He <br />referenced the idea of increasing recycling or reducing the amount of energy used by the City. <br />Acting Chairperson Bentz stated that some items, such as the tree sale and expo, remain the same <br />on the Work Plan. He questioned if the newsletter and QCTV items should be removed from the <br />Plan. <br />Board Member Lewis stated that perhaps if there is a singular focus on the Work Plan it would <br />be valuable to have television and newsprint assistance. He noted that the focus of those items <br />may change to garner support for the focused item. <br />City Planner Anderson referenced the idea of recycling participation and noted that would be a <br />great idea for the Work Plan, advising that he does have a budget for recycling that could be used <br />to promote the message. <br />Board Member Valentine agreed that the QCTV and newspaper items could be listed on the <br />Work Plan with the understanding that those items are tools and not a focus on their own. <br />Board Member Hiatt referenced the idea of water conservation and stated that while initially that <br />concept is not measurable, he still believes that it is an important topic the Board should focus <br />on. He stated that perhaps that could be the second item on the Work Plan. <br />City Planner Anderson confirmed Board consensus on the main items of the Work Plan being <br />listed as recycling and water conservation, with the inclusion of the tree sale and environmental <br />expo as well as the QCTV and newspaper items to continue. He questioned if the Board would <br />still like to include the additional discussion point of the viability of the Board. <br />Acting Chairperson Bentz stated that perhaps the Board should gauge the reaction of the Council <br />to this Work Plan before deciding whether to pose that question. <br />City Planner Anderson strongly encouraged all Members be available to attend the worksession <br />with the Council, noting that he will alert the Board to the exact date as soon as possible. <br />Environmental Policy Board / June 2, 2014 <br />Page 5 of 6 <br />
