Tim Hoffman, representing the Heart Safe Program, introduced himself and indicated he is a
survivor of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), the number one killer in America. He provided a video
presentation that detailed his medical emergency and emphasized the importance of calling 911,
cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). Mr.
Hoffman explained how Ramsey can become a Heart Safe Community, which is a volunteer
driven initiative relying upon community volunteers to initiate and support.
Bryan Platz, Coon Rapids Police Officer, reported they had raised $7,000 in two months to
create this video and thanked the sponsors that were listed at the end of the video.
Mr. Hoffman stated since this incident happened to him, he h>come to know many survivors
and has a sense of the need to give back. He presented facts relating to the number of SCA's
each year being 400,000, or over 1,000 a day. He stated the nationwide rate of survival is only
5% but in Coon Rapids, it is 23% and in Anoka County as a whole, it is 16%. This higher
percentage of survival is because with immediate bystander CPR and AED treatment, there is an
85% chance of surviving. He emphasized that the more people in the public who are trained in
CPR, the higher the chance of saving a life.
Mr. Hoffman and Officer Platz desc ' ed how to b
of points required to receive that ignation, and re
new training events and 24 AED sites in public location
already has in place and estimated it could receive this
sessions of ten or more peo . e.
Mr. Hoffman com
a map of AED local
art Safe Com iunity, the number
ents that include aTninimum of ten
ficer Platz reviewed what Ramsey
nation by holding 26 training
es of government suppoeded for this program including
Officer Pla d that Coon Ra has AED locations, noting the Fire Department
conduct ss inspections an now is s a question whether the business has an
AED
Mr. Hoff
Rapids dam
stepped in to pe
resented a CTN Ne segment describing a SCA that occurred on the Coon
g a dance festival whorl two bystanders, trained in CPR by Coon Rapids,
CPR and saved his life.
Officer Platz describe. - •' nce between a heart attack that is accompanied by symptoms
and SCA.
