with MTS Sound Incorporated and they advise directing the p.a. systems towards
the spectators and not up into the air and turning down the volume. Mr. Heger
stated that the Lions are taking some action in an effort to reduce the noise.
Mr. Heger named some of the contributions the Lions are able to make towards
the community because of these fund raisers. Mr. Heger stated that the Lions
derive great pleasure from helping the less fortunate in the community. Mr.
Heger stated that the Lions' best fund raisers are Game Fair parking and the
Sand Races.

Douglas Fountain - 15255 Garnet St. N.W. - Stated that the philanthropy of the
Lions is not in question; the issue is the noise and disturbance the sand
races create.

Donna Hawkinson - 7030 149th Lane - Stated that her property abuts the sand
race property; the races disturb area wildlife; litter has been deposited on
her property during the races; people were parking on 149th and trespassing
across her property to get to the races; children afraid to play outside
during the races. Ms. Hawkinson added that fund raiser are good but an
alternative to sand races should be selected.

Rose Heruth - 14900 Kamacite - Stated that Lions contributions to the
community are wonderful but there must be an alternative location for the
races that would not create such a residential disturbance.

Councilmember Cox inquired that if the Lions can minimize traffic and reduce
the noise and exercise better control over parking, would the citizens have
any objection to the Lions attempting to conduct their sand races another
season. Councilmember Cox noted that last year was a trial season and the
Lions and City Council are concerned with citizen interest. Councilmember Cox
stated that the sand race fund raiser will not continue if it operates in a
way that is objectionable to the residents in the area.

Rose Heruth - Stated that she cannot give Councilmember COx an answer at this
time and added that it also concerned her that she was not made aware of the
races that were to be held so close to her home last year until they were
under way.

Ms. Anderson - 149th and Limonite - Stated she had a gathering at her home the
day of the races last year and the noise from the races was no more
objectionable than the aircraft flying overhead from the airport; it is
something that has been lived with for years.

Vic Buries - 7101 149th Lane - Stated that the noise is not the same as that of
aircraft overhead; commend the Lions for what they do for the community;
attended a Council meeting a couple years ago in which Council stated that
they would not put up with barking dogs all day and night -- barking dogs is
no comparison to the noise we put up with from the races; also had a gathering
the day of the races and it was embarassing to live in a community that would
allow this activity adjacent to residential neighborhoods.

Donna Bunes- Stated that when the p.a. system went on it was startling and
the engine roar was ~ Lions should research an alternate location or
look for a better type\of fund raiser.
~ ~ February 26, 1985
