From
Barbara Green
7321 150 th in nw

Aug. 25 1987

First of all I would like you to know that I have tried to keep up with
the airport ~ssue for the last few years. With the orignial north-south
plan, when it was decieded that an east-west runway might be better and
when it changed back to north-~outh. I have attended meetings, and asked
questions to be sure I knew what was going on.

During these meetings and conversations certain reasons have been brought
up regarding why we should have airport zoning and expansion.

In the spring meeting it was announced that ~~ wanted to put an asphalt
plant on Ramsey Blvd.. And we were asked. Would you rather have an asphalt
plant or an airport? Although the site for this has changed, my answer
is that wedon't have to have either. Our city council does not have to
let this be built they can simply say NO.

Another time we were told that with out airport zoning and expansion we
would become a bedroom community. Are you telling me that cities like
Golden Valley, Hopkins, New Hope, Osseo, Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park,
Champltn, Columbia Heights~ Edina, Fridley, Spring Lake Park, and Plymouth
and the list. could go on h"t I don't believe these are all bedroom community
and don't think you do either.

When we asked about Crystal airport and all the accidents there. We were
told that they didn't have proper zoning and our zoning was to protect
us. Yet when I talked to Reps. of both Crystal airport and the Metro
airport co~m~si°n they said that most of the accidents and deaths at crystal
were due te pilot error. That can also happen here.

Then we were told that with a runway size of 3300 ft. we would only have
single ang!ne planes and a few twin engines, but no Jets. Why then does
Crystal have a runway size of 3250 ft.. A full 50 feet shorter than our
proposed rUnwayl, Yes they have single engine planes , twin engine, But
they also have small Jets and they have accomadated up to a DC3. On a
runway 50 ft. shorter than ours will be.
Next we w~e told that the airport will stop the landfill, site P was
mentioned. But according to a letter dated July 29 1987 from the Metro
council to Mayor Rieman the airport cannot interfer with site selection
according to state stature# ~. ~/70.~// ~d. ~

We were almo told that it would stop further expansion of the exsisting
landf~ll- Yes it would- But in a recent conversation with Dave Hartley
I asked"Is ~h~rs any other way to stop the landfill? Dares answer was
YES, So we are not stuch with either the landfill or the airport. We
don't have to have either.
