\\

Looking west toward the station buildln~

station. The MVi'A also recalls the per-
formance values of a 'town-scale train
depot' prototype of years past, and by
enlistin§ the support of multiple agen-
mas hopes to create a positive local
image for transit.
The five agencies discussed their
objectives and agreed to expand the
development program to include areas
and agencies beyond the station
building and ti~e MVTA. This will allow
the station to function both as a canter
for transit activities, including commu-
nity employee circulator service and
rideshare matching, and also to func-
tion as an organizing focus for the sur-
rounding community activities, tn this
way, the coIlaDoratwe CTS effort cre-
ates a dual opportunity for revitalizing
the transit image within the community
by enat~ling the design of a community-
sensitive transit statmn, and also by
allowing the creation of a transit ori-
anted community around that station.

Design
Master p~an
LSA Design developed the concept of a
community transit station into a master

plan by creating a design environment
tJnat considered transit and community
elements equally. The master plan inte-
grates market rate and subsidized Iow
and moderate income apartments,
owner-occupied townhomes, adjacent
senior housing, a nearby medical clinic,
day-care facilities, retail/entertainment
centers, auto service, employment, and
a state-of-the-art ~ansit station/park-
and-ride facility offedng computer access
scheduling information, real-time bus
location maps, and increased levels of
service frequency. The plan blends these

"The numerous
connected paths and
walkways throughout
the site are designed
to offer pedestrians
and cyclists a choice of
tra, ei routes"

various uses around the transit station
and the primary community open space
or 'Community Green', and creates an
ex~ensive series of Pedestrian and bicy-
cle paths to extend connections out into
the larger community. The numerous
connected paths and walkways through-
out the site are designed to offer pedes-
trians a~d cyclists a choice of travel
routes, which increases variety and
interest and facilitates trip linking.
The transit station building is planned
to be situated centrally to the several
retail activities on the site. This promi-
nent location establishes the structure
as the focal element around which the
station area retail development is orga-
nized; the passenger waiting area is
flanked by attached retail buildings, and
additional retail spaces extend out from
the station. As it fronts onto the devel-
oping r. ransit corridor to the west, the
station building will atso provide a west-
ern arc, hitectural anchor for the commu-
nity greenway and residential areas.
The community green and the transit
station are designed to act as the east-
west terminus points, anchoring move-
ments oriented in those directions.
