CASE STUDY

Multimodal

Minnesota

m

m

Communities are realizing that investment in strategically placed transit
stations produces a high return in the form of a positive influence on the
surrounding area and future redevelopment

I Jo Ann Olsen

Hubbard Marketplace preliminary design showing the Metro Transit 'S' curve and shelter~
42;~ Aw~. N

HuDbarcJ Marketplace final design

It takes creative ideas to blend transit
systerr~ and facilities within the con-
fines of a devdoped area. By imple-
menting an inclusive doorman-making
proce~, multiple sources of funding and,
most tmportandy, a 'sxe:selection process
that responds to the community, transit
fadlities can be designed to presen, e and
enhance the urban [abnc of the area.
Hubbard Marketplace in Robbmsdale,
Minnesota, and Uptown Transit Station
in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, are
examples of tramlt investments that blend
with and enhanced maSting conditions.
Robbmsdale is a bedroom community
acnvely redeveloping areas of iu duunct
downtown, and Uptown t~ a thn,nng
retai[/restdenual area of Minneapolm.
Mulumoda! transit stations were proposed
at both sites and [.SA Design was com-
missioned a~ the landscape design, archi-
lecture and planning consultant, charged
with integrating transit facilities into
these communities. The projects maihtain
the viability of the area and are being
used as examples for other multimode[
transit facilities.

SRe selection
The most critical component to these pro-
jeers was the selection of'a site that had a
posture effect on the community and best
met ~e goals of the stakeholders.
Robbmsdale is active tn redeveloping its
downtown area-. The s~te selection in this
case had to enhance the redevelopment
potential. Uptown is a v-ibrant and com-
pletely developed area and the site selec-
non in this case had to result in minimum
displacement and no loss of value to exist-
lng development.

Hubbard Marketplace
I_~A Design intually intennewed sur-
rounding businesses, the Robbinsdale City
Council and Robbinsdale Economic
Development Agency, and worked vath
transit provider Metro Transit to deter-
mine needs and concerns.
