awesome job of diffusing a situation recently. He said Captain Katers would make a good Police
Chief.
Councilmember Johns agreed in hiring from within, and this candidate is qualified. She said you
can see where he instills trust with his staff. She stated she supports him as Police Chief.
Councilmember LeTourneau stated he felt like he should do due diligence. He said he did not
know how to do that with one candidate. He looked at this with a different perspective, and
looked for negative things He said he could not find them. The interview questions were
structured for him to go the whole spectrum and Captain Katers did well.
Mayor Strommen said one of the things that struck her is that there is no need for a change of
command from the outside. Captain Katers' demeanor and trust is a good fit, culturally. He is in
line with the core values of our community. He may not be the innovator, but he will listen to
ideas. He will be able to reason through.
Police Chief Way noted there was a discussion earlier of how to deal with vacancies. He
suggested waiting to get Captain Katers' opinion and his vision of the structure of the
department.
The consensus of the Council was to consider promotion of Captain Jeff Katers as the next Chief
of Police at the next regular meeting.
3. TOPICS FOR FUTURE DISCUSSION
Noted.
4. MAYOR / COUNCIL / STAFF INPUT
None
5. ADJOURNMENT
The Work Session of the City Council was adjourned at 7:55 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Kurtis G.
