There are so many products <br />that were thought to be safe and all of a sudden it is announced that they <br />are not safe. There are things coming out of an incinerator that they have <br />no way of detecting that could be hazardous to your health. How will you kn~ <br />if it is the wrong material to burn, will it be after the fact? Will there <br />be chemists and engineers monitoring the facility all the time? <br /> <br />Terry Villeneuve - Are these chemists qualified with chemical hazardous <br />waste? Do they know everything there is to know about hazardous waste. <br />Will there be things emitted that cannot be detected? The unknown is what <br />we are afraid of. <br /> <br />Thomas Williams - 5180 157th Lane - Council was elected to represent the <br />people; the community is here and they are giving their opinion. We are <br />doctors, lawyers, engineers, teachers. We are educated people and we <br />understand tax tables; we don't want Atlas. Use of the land for an Atlas <br />facility would probably lower property values in the rest of the city and <br />the city would lose tax base. Atlas' facility could fall under the public <br />nuisance law; a considerable number of members of the city would swear to <br />that facility being a public nuisance everytime it operates. Wenck <br />Associates has reported that the citizen questions are valid and they have <br />not been answered yet. PCA is doing a fine job and we understand that <br />there is pollution in the landfill. It's not what comes out of the stacks <br />today but rather what came out 30 years ago that kills people 30 years from <br />now. Atlas wants to locate in Ramsey because it is convenient to the <br />airport and the wind blows from the north and west predominantly. In the <br />research and development facility, Atlas will contract with people <br />approaching them and saying 'try to burn this'. The City has put issues to <br />a vote of the people in the past; that was not side-stepping <br />responsibility. It was getting a concise idea of what the people want. <br /> <br />Mary Ann McFarlane - 14151 Krypton Street - I am concerned about what is <br />happening in the city. One of the things that concerns me is that the <br />majority of questions raised have not been answered; maybe this public <br />hearing is premature. I would like to hear a report from the consultants, <br />what MPCA says and what environmental agencies say before I can make a <br />decision on my own. I have read the second edition of questions and <br />answers sent out by Atlas. In the first question and answer they compare <br />their emissionB to gas from a home range, smoking cigarettes, bus exhaust <br />and exposure to carcinogens while filling a gas tank. I am concerned about <br />these things Atlas has sited but laws are being past to protect against <br />those exposures. I have not heard any answers to questions about <br />transporting hazardous waste in and out of the city and the socio-economic <br />impact. I would like to hear the comments and answers to unanswered <br />questions at a similar hearing.
