By: PUBLIC WORKS FACILITY Dean Kapler, Fire Chief/Director of Public Works Mark Boos, Parks/Utilities Supervisor FC Case # Background: In 1994, the ~City acquired approximately three acres with two buildings at 14100 Jaspar Street to be developed~ as the Public Works facility. The buildings, one concrete and the other metal, were essentially shellswith few improvements meeting the City's needs. In 1995, work began on retrofitting the bmldtngs and site with a $280,000 budget. The majority of~tems were completed by early 199'6. In 1997, the blacktop parking lot was fimshed and the landscape berms were constructed from composted wood shavings and fill sand. The enclosed ledger details some of the activity, Remaining ~ part of the original work plan is the landscaping and fencing. There currently is $23,738 remaining in the facility's development budget. The purpose bfthis case is to detail the items remaining to be addressed and receive City Council authorization:~to proceed with their implementation. The following documents are enclosed for your information: 1) public Works Facility Development Ledger 2) ;: Fencing Diagram 3) Landscaping Request for Proposal A 24" x 36" Landscape Plan will be available at the meeting. Fencing Staff is in a~eement that chain link fencing is warranted for the south side (rear) of the buildings. F~ncing provides for outside storage security for such things as culverts which do not need to be ~er shelter. Fencing will also discourage vandals and thieves from the rear or less publicly-vialed areas of the site and the area could be used as a back-up impound area for the Police Depar~ent. The fencing project will cost approximately $4,200. Landscapin. gi As the landsaape plan demonstrates, the landscaping is intended to be low maintenance yet a treatment wl~h will continue to increase in aesthetic value. Staff is in agreement that the City's facilities shogld be at least as good in quality as what we would expect of our business community, r'This plan provides for that. It should also be noted that McKinley Street will connect to J~par Street in the near future, making it a frequently used east/west route in our commereial/i~idustrial area. The landscaping, with an irrigated area, is expected to cost less than $20,000.
