REVIEW OF RAMSEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
PLAYFIELDS/PLAYGROUND
By: Merland Otto

CASE #1

Background:

The Parks Commission scheduled a review of the recreation facilities at Ramsey
Elementary School for the month of March. School District 11 owns 47 acres of
school property, a portion of which is used for community park and playfields. The
City maintains the playfields and skating facilities and has cost shared on
development of playground equipment.

Current facilities at the elementary school include:

PlaygrOund
Non-regulation football/soccer field
Four softball fields
Two hockey rinks
Free-skating area
Warming house
Hard surface basketball court
Parking lots

No master plan has been developed for the school property nor has any formal
agreement been discussed by the City and school district regarding future
development.

Observations:

Since RYAA uses the athletic fields and the hockey association uses the ice rinks,
notices were sent to each of these organizations, in addition to residents of the
immediate area.

The playfields are heavily used and are not irrigated, thus, the turf tends to be in
poor condition.

The school district has expressed an interest in irrigating the upper level ballfields.
Mark Boos is exploring this with school district personnel.

Commission Action:

Will be based on your discussion.

Review Checklist:

Acting City Administrator
City Engineer
Parks Coordinator
Parks: 3/7/91
