MEMORANDUM

TO:.

FROM:

DATE:

Ramsey Elementary School Educators

Parks/Utilities Coordinator Mark Boos on behalf of the City of Ramsey
Park and Recreation Commission

Naming of New 13.5 Acre City Park

December 26, 1991

HistoriCally city parks in Ramsey have been referred to or named for the subdivision that
contains ~e p.axk. In Ramsey's newest undeveloped park, the subdivisions that surround it
each had a paxt in providing land for the park. To the Park and Recreation Commission it
didn't s.e~ pimdent to choose one name over another. It did seem practical though to
involve tile ~l~idents in naming the park, in this case Ramsey Elementary School pupils.
This tiny Civies experiment is intended to suggest a possibly non-traditional name for the
Park and Recreation Commission's consideration and also to be fun. There is no guarantee
that the 9~k's. name will be chosen from suggestions compiled by your students but it's
hoped tha~ it will. It is also the intent that after selecting the park name the student(s) that
tenderexl be new name would be available to accept a written notice of appreciation from
the City at a Commission meeting.

If there is ~ leaning for a certain type of name it is likely one that represents something in
the natural word. For example the last park named by the Commission was Rabbit Park.
The name!~was chosen for the park's proximity to Rabbit Street. One sort of possibility
might involve choosing a common marsh dweller with an easily pronounced or elegant
Latin nam{! Below are certain items that may be of interest or prompt an idea:

Th.e CitY hopes to connect the Elementary School and surrounding neighborhoods
with the park via hiking and biking trails.

The park has as its borders substantial wetland areas and associated critters.

Pa~k development will begin in the spring of 1992. Proposed improvements will
include a softball and football/soccer field, play equipment, picnic area and
connecting trails.

Thc park is located between three "lakes" those being Sunfish Lake, Grass Lake
and' "Magnesium Pond".

AttaChed is a site location map.

In order to participate, please have your lists to City Hall, in care of Mark Boos, by
February ~, 1992 for consideration at the February,Park and Recreation Commission
meeting, Please include or keep a record of the child s name and age who sponsors each
entry. (The more entries the better.)

Mark Boos'
Parks/Utilities Coordinator
