The Principal Arterial System is primarily maintained by MnDOT
and the Counties primarily maintain the A -Minor Arterial system, which account for 25 percent of all vehicle miles traveled
and 33 percent of vehicle miles traveled by bus. One other way of looking at this is that of every three miles traveled by
bus is on a roadway owned and maintained by one of the seven Counties in the region. This fact underlines the
importance of County roadways in operating the transit system(s).
In order for the shipment of goods within and through the region, highways need to
provide reliable, efficient, safe, and affordable transportation. Major improvements
to the transit infrastructure will have only minimal impact on this as the percentage
of travel by transit would need to exponentially increase from its current mode share
of three (3) percent. Without these outcomes, it would be expected that the A -Minor
Arterial roadway system will have to continue to absorb the increase to
accommodate the movement of people and goods.
Figure A-7: Commercial Vehicle Trafilc
Heavy Commercial Vehicle
Average Daily Traffic Volume (2011)
IN,a,+n, •neu
I.4.0+6f1.,2301,
Figure E-1: 2090 Congested Principal Arterials for the Current Revenue Scenario
Congested Principal Arterials 2040
aAp,.,...
NI
.n.m' o mo mam on•.rf
o
• dn`e: one,.
d am_
As stated in the TPP.: Reliable, efficient, safe, and affordable transportation connects the region's residents with jobs,
schools, community amenities, families, and businesses. And it supports the movement of goods and services both within
the region and beyond. However, the maps above show that virtually all of the major commercial truck routes will be
congested in 2040.
