Mr. Bowen explained the burning process. The first burn, known as the preparation <br />burn, is done in the beginning. -This burn is used 1o get rid ol weeds. 'The second burn, <br />Known as the management burn, is done early in the sprmcj and does not harm prairie <br />grasses. This burn is used to maintain the invasion of trees and to control exotic grasses. <br />This burn should be done every three years. A prairie is less expensive than a Iraditional <br />lawn because lhere is nol need lor lerlilizer, top soil, or mowing, thus eliminating labor <br />and material costs. <br /> <br />Commissioner Lokker inquired which area of the school park would be suggested <br />prairie planting. <br /> <br />Mark Boos replied him the area parallel 1o the hockey rinks, <br /> <br />Merland Otto suggested having prairie planted along the trail corridor. <br /> <br />Mark Boos stated lhat they will nol be doing anything at the school until they hear from <br />the 4-H groups. <br /> <br />Chairman HeIland asked thai Bruce Bacon keep the Commission updated regarding the <br />possible prairie project, <br /> <br />Bruce. Bacon informed the Commission of 1he upcoming Environmental Expo and inviled <br />them to sel up a boolh. He also asked il someone trom the Commission would like to atlend <br />the Tree City Convention this year. He slated that he would intorm them of the dates when <br />they become available to him. <br /> <br />Case #2 Central Park Expansion. <br /> <br />Merland Otlo mentioned he had spoken 1o Ms. Bieniek, Director of Baseball, 3 &4 (RYAA), <br />regarding ti~e letter she sent to Pentair, Inc. concernin9 1he donation or sale of property <br />Io the City. He told the Commission thal she has not yet received a reply to her letter but <br />agreed to keep the Commission inlormed of any changes. <br /> <br />Chairman Heltand suggested sending a letter to Pentair, Inc. ~rom the Park and Recreation <br />Commission. <br /> <br />Commissioner Swokowski volunleered to write and sent the letter. <br /> <br />Chairman Hetland requested that Mark Boos follow up on Ms. Paula Bieniek's letter. <br /> <br />Case ,'e3 Survey of Residents.
