ANOKA COUNTY SOIL AND WATER
CONSERVATION DISTRICT

MINNESOTA

Bunker Lake
Anoko. Minnesota
lelephone: (612) 757-4221

June 28, 1984

TO: Ram,,~ey Residents Coalition, Inc.
:'c/O Susan Beale
t~8~.il Sunfish Lb. Blvd.
Raml~ey, MN. 55303

FROM,: Ano]~a Soil & Water Conservation District
~P.L Rudolph, District Conservation Aide.

RE: Ram?y Landfill Expansion Project Soils Evaluation.

As: Per ~our request on June 21, 198~ for a soils evaluation of the Ramsey
Landfill Expansion areas, I have prepared a brief report. Ail areas outlined
and s0ii descriptions are approximate and soils information have been taken
from the An~ka County Soils Survey Manual.

Inctude~ with this letter is a color coded map of the soils and a brief
soils list land description sheet. Also individual soils interpretations sheet
with rz~ a~erisks to mark especially important categories with relation to the
landfill p~oJect.
The ar~as colored in Red are basically wet soils. Those soils that have a
naturaliwa~er table of +2 feet to 5 ft. depth. They are for the most part either
wet o~gGni~, soils or wet coarse sand soils. Wet organic soils if contaminated
can c~uee ~urface and ground pollution due to the fact that these marshy or
swamp iarea~ act as a sponge for the surrounding higher ground areas. Contaminates
would probably collect in these areas due to run-off.

r
A%~ this point mention should be made of the existing wetlands that lie witb~in
the sxte abd those that lie in close proximity to the site. Wetlands #118W in the
south~e~st ~orner of the southern expansion site, #667W that lies in the north-
western ar~a of the southern site, #657W in the southeast corner of the northern
expansion ~ea, all appear on the DNR "Protected Waters Inventory" map. These
areas 'may ~upport a host of wildlife. It is not in k~eeping with Soil & Water
conserVatign District policy to fiji such wetlands or unnecmssar~ly pollute them
thus ¢.ausiSg the potential for widespread ground water c~ntamination and surface
water: ~ont.,kmination to surrounding bodies of water. It is necessary to note that
Grass: ~ake~or (Sunfish Lake) lies within approximately 200 feet to the East of
the southern expansion .area. The Rum River is within close proximity to the East.
Sever~ "p~otected wetlands" lie to the southwest, east and northeast all within
appro~imat~ly 600 feet of less of the expansion areas. Potential for widespread
cont.amr ~inat~on of surface water seems inevitable.

i AN EOUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER
r ~ ~
