CASE COMMENDATION TO POLICE OFFICER SHELDON ERDMAN By: Mike Auspos, Police Chief Background:, On Nova~ber il0, 1992 our squad received a call of a child having difficulty breathing. This was' at 5:4~2 a.m. at a private residence. Police Officer Sheldon Erdman responded to the scene !and !found a 13 year old boy in bed, unresponsive and with very labored breathing,: Officer Erdman attempted to establish contact with the boy but he did not respond toreith~r voice or physical stimulus. Recognizing that the child was in desperate straits, Shbldoh administered oxygen using positive pressure coupled with the boy's labored att~mp!s to breathe. This treatment likely had the effect of slowing the downward spiral of ;the boy's condition and kept him stabilized until the paramedics arrived. They inserted an;air0ay and took him to a hospital. On Noven~beri25, 1992 we received a letter from the boyts mother thanking Officer Erdman for his Successful efforts in bringing aid and comfort to the boy. Observations~ Police Off'~er Sheldon Erdman performed his duties in a fine manner and, by doing what he is traified to ho, assisted in bringing the child to eventual recovery, as evidenced by the letter from tha boy's mother. For that I commend him. This is, however, just the adminisffatlve part of commending work well done by an officer. What really strikes me is reading SylviaiMickelson's letter, so beautifully written, and realizing that Sheldon's proceduralleffdyts helped to keep Matt Mickelson with us as a part of this community. More tha~n just ~ecognizing the proper procedure a,nd duty, this letter especially commended Sheldon Efdmah as being a beautiful person who s ". .... kind voice and gentle manner" made such ~tn irhpact on a frightened mother. ' I learned many years ago the value of TLC (Tender Loving Care) and the impact it has not only on the, vict!m but on those who are suffering with that person.
