First is a 100 to 1 reduction of materials that
wou~dl O~herwise be landfilled. Second is conservation of
virgi~ a~gregates.

At ~he present time, when redevelopment occurs, when a
stree~ iR reconstructed, when a driveway is rebuilt, or when
a b~ild~ng foundation is dug up, the demolition materials
such &s.~he old concrete block, the old curb and gutter, the
old, asphalt and the old driveway apron end up as landfill
material. Sometimes the material goes to a licensed
smniltRryi landfill and sometimes to an unregulated site. Un-
lik~ organic waste, it does not decay, it does not disin-
tegrate.~ The material lasts forever. Centuries from now,
the.!Con~rete demolition and the asphalt demolition will be
in baSicMlly the same condition as when it was deposited.

A far bletter solution is to recycle. 98% of used concrete
can be r~cycled as Class 5 gravel. 1% of used concrete can
be ~e~yCiled as ferrous metal. Only 1% of recycled concrete
goes to.~andfill. That 1% is mostly wood.

The ir~c~cling process is simple. The demolition concrete
and ~em0~lition asphalt are crushed just like freshly mined
rock ~ndigravel. The recycled conrete and asphalt is stock-
piled for future use. There is nothing experimental or
uni~ a~out the processing. It is just an ordinary crush-
ing !operation. No exotic equipment or dangerous chemicals
are i~vO~ved.

75% of ~he proposed Bury & CarlSon Ramsey facility is
plan~edi~or recycling concrete and asphalt The remaining
25% IS ~lanned for a contractor supply yard. Sand, ag-
gregateS, and related materials will be for sale for
landSCaping and light construction projects. This will be a
convenience for the contractor or individual who needs to
dispOSe ~f demolition materials and supply a redevelopment
project

It7
