CASE #1

BUSINESS VISITATION PLAN
By: James Gromberg, Project Manager

Background:~

©nc oF thc goaiis fo)' the Economic Development Commission during 1992 is the development of
the business vi~itaiion procedure to begin visiting Ramsey businesses throughout the year and get
feedback on b~sin4sses' major concerns, the things they like about City services and what they
would like to s~e done differently. Over the past year the EDC has become more active in working
with businesSeS,,; an~ encouraging businesses to become better members of the community. This
has been verY,[evident with the success of the Business EXPO and Business Appreciation Day,
annual events beldiin our City. Building on these past successes, it may now be a good time for
the EDC to de~elo, 0 the process to visit businesses and to promote a working relationship between
the City, the EpC~ lhe Economic Development Authority and the businesses to create more growth
in the City. Sca'me, Of the main points of this visitation plan should be that the EDC members visit
random buSin .dsSeSi and not only the businesses where they are acquainted with the owners. The
EDC should algo d~ide on the form for the int, erview or the meeting. This form needs to be fairly
gen.eric but S~ecif!c enough so t.hat a perso, n s pe. rsonal views do not unduly reflect wh.at the
businesses coilcems may be. While developing th~s program, the EDC should also be looking at
how these businesses would fit m the development of a business assocmnon or a local arm of the
Chamber of ~,om~erce. Tins also works as an ~deal nme for the EDC member visiting the
business to talk a~bout the advantages of the City developing a local arm of the Chamber of
Commerce.

Recommendation:

A form for buiines~ visitations and a preliminary schedule by which to conduct the visits should be
developed. T~.e EDC should also be looking at the formation of a subcommittee to meet with Pete
Turok of the Ano~a Area Chamber of Commerce to develop a Ramsey wing of the Chamber of
Commerce.

Commlss~on~ Action:

Motion to fort
to develop a R

n a-Spbcommittee, to meet with Pete Turok of the Anoka Area Chamber of Commerce
amsey wing of the Chamber of Commerce.

Review Ch6ckl{st:
City Adminis~ator
Prqject Man'dg, er
EDC:05-13-9

1
