Background.'..

BUSINESS VISITATION PLAN
By: James Gromberg, Project Manager

CASE

One of the go~ls f~ the Economic Development Commission during 1992 is the development of
the business vitiation p,rocedure to begin visiting Ramsey businesses throughout the year and get
feedback on bosin~sses major concerns, the things they like about City services and what they
would like to s~e dlbne differently. Over the past year the EDC has become more active in working
with businesSe'; ariel encouraging businesses to become better members of the community. This
has been verY :viqent with the success of the Business EXPO and Business Appreciation Day,
annual events I teldlin our City. Building on these past successes, it may now be a good time for
the EDC to del ~10~ the process to visit businesses and to promote a working relationship between
the City, the E] DC, ~he Economic Development Authority and the businesses to create more growth
in the City. Sc rne Of the main points of this visitation plan should be that the EDC members visit
random busine ;se.Si and not only the businesses where they are acquainted with the owners. The
EDC should al. o d~ide on the form for the interview or the meeting. This form needs to be fairly
generic but sp :cite enough so that a person's personal views do not unduly reflect what the
businesses cont:em~ may be. While developing this program, the EDC should also be looking at
how these bus'.~eSs~s would fit in the development of a business association or a local arm of the
Chamber ofi~rri~erce. This also works as an ideal time for the EDC member visiting the
business to tat~k al~out the advantages of the City developing a local arm of the Chamber of
Commerce.
Recommendllti%:

A form for bl~slnesS visitations and a preliminary schedule by which to conduct the visits should be
developed. T~ E~C should also be looking at the formation of a subcommittee to meet with Pete
Turok of xhe/~nok~ Area Chamber of Commerce to develop a Ramsey wing of the Chamber of
Commerce.

Commission i Action:
Motion to forr~ a
subcommittee to meet with Pete Tm'ok of the Anoka Area Chamber of Commerce
to develop a R~ms~y wing of the Chamber of Commerce.

Review CheCklist:

City Administrator
Project Manag ,er

EDC:04-08-92,
