CASE #6

WOOl) STOVE INSURANCE INSPECTIONS
By: Fire Chief David Griffin

Background:

Generally in today's society when a homeowner is looking to change insurance carriers and
currently has installed a free-standing wood burning stove, the insurance requests that an official,
designated by the City, inspect and declare the installation to be correct and without hazard to the
structure. While this can be accomplished, the risk may still be present should a fire be caused by
that particular stove. After discussion with City Administrator Schroeder, I proposed that a form
(available at the meeting) be used as a check sheet looking for possible and obvious violations to
the Uniform Fire Code and to any current City Ordinances. This letter/form will be filled out by
the inspecting Fire Fighter, signed by that inspector and the Fire Chief, and mailed to the
homeowner and directly to the insurance carrier. A cop)' may then be maintained by the City if
desired.

Board Action:

Based upon discussion.

Review Checklist:

Fire Chief

FB: 10/28/92

Also distributed to:
Ci~' Administrator
