Minnesota Depa~ment of Natural Resources
Shore Fishing Program

The MinneSota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) works to
improve a~d iexpand opportunities to fish from shore.

1. PisSing Piers
2. F~S~ng Platforms
3. S~o=mline "Flat Spot" Management
4. P~s~ng Resource Improvement

Fishing Piermand Platform
The Trails ~d Waterways Unit has been developing fishing piers
and fishing ~latforms throughou? Minnesota since 1984. By the
end of lg92 ~here will be 127 piers statewide and 5 fishing
platforms,~ T. his includes 39 piers in the metro area.

Shoreline i"Ft!at Spot" Management
In 1992-19i93],~ a metro-pilot program is being established to
assist lodali~iunits of government to improve fishing sites on
their pub~iCilshorelands. This will include improving sites
identified! ~n the shore fishing survey by improving access to the
sites and Ib~ providing "flat spot" areas on the shore for
improved flis~ing opportunities. This program will focus on
meeting t~e heeds of people with disabilities, elderly, and
children. ~

Fishing R~rce Improvement
The DNR's iS ~e~,~tion of Fisheries develops lake management plans for
individuali l~,kes to improve fishing habitats and angler
opportunit!ie~I. Improvement plans include addressing watershed
managementil, ~ocking, aeration, control Of exotic species, and
other wa~e~ management methods.

The fundin~ f.or these programs comes from a combination of
sources: I~ ~.' (Minnesota Legislature as recommended by the
Leglslatlv~ Commission on Minnesota Resources), RIM (Reinvest in
Minnesota-~t~a~e funding), Minnesota fishing license surcharge,
and Federali A~id for Sport Fish Restoration (federal tax on
fishing eq~iD~ent and motor boat fuels).

The floatiDg~piers and s~nre platforms are developcd
cooperatively~ with local units of governments. Typically the DNR
will enterl~ i~o a written agreement with a city or county where
the DNR pr~.des the pier and installation, with the local
governmen=;i p~oviding the land and maintenance/long term care.
Pier sitesI are selected jointly by the DNR's Trails and Waterways
Unit, and Se=tion of Fisheries, and the local unit of government.
Sites are selected based on how well they meet certain criteria
including thR' people they can serve and fishing potential.

For more iDf°rmation on how your community can improve its shore
fishing opportunities, contact the Minnesota Department of
Natural ReSources, Trails and Waterways Unit at (612) 297-1151.

13,
