I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

12-5-83

To: Lloyd Schnel le
From' Chief Auspos
Re: Squad Purchase

You ~ill notice that the Hennepin County bids for squads, as we would
be ordering the car, has come in higher than what I budgeted for in 1984.
The reason for this, I am told by the fleet manager at Brookdale Ford, is
that the Ford Motor Company has for the past two years offered a price
break to its dealers when they bid for squad sales. This year, due to a
busy assembly line, they discontinued this practice, which amounted to about
8 or 9 hundred dollars.

I called Elk River Ford to see what they could d~ on the same squad package
and their figure is six hundred dollars higher, greenberg AMC/Olds does not
offer any sort of squad package in their line of vehicles and could not,
therefore, meet the specs.

The smaller Ford vehicle offered in the bids is the LTD and only comes with a
four cylinder engine'. Of all the municipalities participating in the Hennepin
County purchasing plan, only three had expressed interest in this size vehicle
and the bids were structured on this desire. Eighty cars of the size we are
ordering were requested by the other coamunities. I think this illustrates tlmt
this size car is still popular for police use and, from what I have been told
in conversations with other police administrators, the Fords have an excellent
maintenance record, to which I can also attest.

I can delay the order until the morning of 12-21-83 but will need approval by
then for the order to be placed under the terms of the purchasing agreement with
Hennepin County.
