CASE #7

ENGINEERING CAR
By: Ryan R. Schroeder

Background:

Council requested that the issue of the City Engineer's staff car again be brought to the
table for discussion. Enclosed is my file on the subject. As you can see from past
discussions, I have maintained that the Engineer relocated to this position with the
understanding that a car was part of the package. I have represented that this could be a

value of $350-$400/month to replace his existing condition.

*Car payment

Mileage (14 mpd @ 233 @ 20 mpg x $1.20)
Insurance
License
Maintenance

$12,000- $13,000 @ 8 - 12% over 4 - 5 years

$3,005- $4,280

$196

$ 600 - $ 9OO

$125

$200

$4,126- $5,701

Further, that for tax purposes, he claims this vehicle as $2,526/year. Finally, that I do not
see where the City will receive a financial benefit by compensating the Engineer for the loss
of personal use of the vehicle in that we would retain the asset and mast maintenance
expense.

Recommendation:

Staff recommends to leave the car issue in its existing condition.

Finance Committee Action:

Based upon discussion.

Reviewed by:

City Administrator

FC: 03/23/93

Copies also distributed to:

City Engineer
Finance Officer
Personnel Coordinator
