CASE #.__~m

EMERGENCY REPLACEMENT OF COMPUTER TERMINAL FOR
POLICE/FINANCE DEPARTMENTS
By: Jessie L. Hart, Finance Officer

Background:

On Monday, September 20, 1993, a Texas Instruments 931 computer terminal "died' and is not
repairable. This terminal was used by the Police Department to access the Texas Instruments 990
mainframe computer which is the direct connection to the State of Minnesota. We have found that
it is necessary that a TI terminal be used to connect to the mainframe. There is currently one TI
931 terminal remaining at City Hall and it is utilized in the Finance Department. It is not necessary
for the Finance Department have a TI terminal, the WYSE type has been used over the past several
years and is as effective and less expensive than the TI 931.

Since it is necessary to get a terminal to keep the Police Department on-line with the State, we are
proposing that the TI 931 terminal be transferred to the Police Department and connected to the TI
990 mainframe, and that a new WYSE type terminal be purchased to replace the TI 931. The TI
931 terminals are currently fully depreciated at an original cost of over $1,000, thus, there is
sufficient funding in the Equipment Revolving Fund to purchase this replacement at a cost of
approximately $500.

Staff Recommendation:

Recommend that the Finance Committee approve the emergency purchase and recommend Council
approve the attached Resolution #93-09-XXX A Resolution Authorizing Expenditure for
Computer Terminal.

Committee Action:

Recommend that the City Council approve attached Resolution g93-09-XXX A Resolution
Authorizing Expenditure for Computer Terminal.

Reviewed by:

Finance Officer
City Administrator

FC: 9/28/93

I
