CASE #

DISCUSS MUNICIPAL FACILITY SMOKE-FREE ENVIRONMENT
By: Ryan R. Schroeder, City Administrator

Background:

At the last Council meeting, it was suggested by Councilmember Beyer that we reconsider
the issue of smoking areas in City Hall. For your edification, smokers currently on Staff
include three in Administrative Services and Finance, two in the Police Department, one in
Public Works and four that work in the Community Development area.

Smoking areas currently include the senior citizens kitchen during the day and the City Hall
mall in the evening or on senior citizen meeting days and also in one of the five squad cars.
Currently, smoking is allowed in any public works or parks facility. It has been suggested
that perhaps it would be beneficial to all concerned to make Ramsey's public facilities and
equipment a smoke-free environment. Upon discussion by the Council, if this is the
eventual position taken, my only suggestion would be that you allow for a phase-in period
prior to the implementation.

Council Action:

Based upon discussion.

Reviewed by:

City Administrator

CC: 02/09/93

Copies also distributed to:

Finance Officer
City Engineer
Police Chief
Public Works Supervisor

71
