CASE # 7

REPORT FROM ROAD AND BRIDGE COMMITTEE
By: Steven Jankowski, City Engineer

Background:

A meeting of the Road and Bridge Committee was held Thursday, April 1, 1993. At that
meeting, the Committee directed action on the following two cases: ~.[:,..-i~ ~ ,'~'~?

Case//4: Discuss Renaming of 153rd Avenue N.W. and Sunfish Lake Drive N.W.

Both of the above streets represent elements of the City's collector roadway system. Both
of the existing names contribute to a certain amount of confusion which negatively impact
their usage as a portion of the City's arterial street system. In the case of Sunfish Lake
Drive N.W., the name is very similar to Sunfish Lake Boulevard N.W. which is also a
significant arterial street within the City. In the case of 153rd Avenue N.W., which is
intended to be a full crosstown east/west road, a portion of the roadway is actually I55th
Avenue N.W. and also contains some currently unnamed north/south elements which may,
in the future, require addresses. Thus, a user traveling this collector street across the City
could encounter as many as four separate street names. The renaming of these streets will
require some minimal costs which would include replacing street signs and procedural
costs associated with notifying affected addresses, holding a public hearing and passing the
necessary ordinance. The Committee felt the name changes worthy of the cost and effort
required and suggested the process be initiated with the solicitation of suggestion for names
through an article in the Ramsey Resident.

Case 4/6:

Designate MSA System Changes

The State of Minnesota allows up to 20% of local street mileage to be designated as MSA
roadway. The City's current MSA system was last revised in 1991 when the system was
brought within .07 miles of the allowable mileage. With the rapid growth the City has
experienced in 1991 and 1992, the existing system designation is almost two miles short of
its maximum allowable. The Road and Bridge Committee directed the City Engineer to
propose revisions to the MSA system which would maximize the amount of designated
mileage.

The Road and Bridge Committee will reconvene on Thursday, April 8, 1993, to discuss the
following additional topics:

Case #1:
Case #2:
Case #3:
Case #5:

Receive Anoka County Five Year Plan
Request Signalization Study of 142nd Avenue N.W. and T.H. #47
Status Report of 153rd Avenue N.W. Extension -
Discuss Status of T.H. #47 and County Road #116 Intersection Project

Council Action:

No action required. This case is for informational purposes only.

Reviewed by:

City Engineer
City Administrator
CC: 04/13/93

III
