Personnel Committee has to make a recommendation to City Council regarding hiring and
he felt that since it was dealing with the Fire Fighters, he'd just as soon have the Fire Board
make the recommendations. Chief Oriffin felt that it should be the Fire Board also.
Councilmember Beyer stated that the object of the former motion was so that these 15
minute meetings wouldn't have to be scheduled. She felt the Fire Fighters could get started
with their in-house trainings and a formal recommendation could take place later. Mr.
Schroeder felt it better if a Committee or Board made a recommendation to the Council and
Council approval is received prior to any other action taking place.. Councilmember Beyer
suggested meeting once a month until the Fire Department has all the Fire Fighters it needs.
Boardmember Sharp felt there would not be enough to discuss to hold monthly meetings
and inquired why the Fire Board couldn't just okay the recommendation of the
Interviewing Panel without a meeting. Mr. Schroeder stated it is a procedure that has to be
followed and added that since these meetings take only about five minutes and the Fire
Fighters have to be present for 7:00 Department meetings, we should schedule these
meetings for 6:55 on the Department meeting night. Mayor Gilbertson suggested that these
meetings should take place but the members on the Board should receive more than a days'
notice. He felt a weeks' notice was more fair and then the meeting should be scheduled 15
minutes prior to a regular Fire Department meeting.

Motion carried. Voting Yes: Mayor Gilbertson, Councilmember Beyer, Boardmembers
Sharp and Simpson. Voting No: None. Absent: Boardmembers Pearson and Williams.

ADJOURNMENT

Motion by Board.member Sharp and seconded by Board.member Simpson to adjourn the
meeting.

Motion carried. Voting Yes: Mayor Gilbertson, Councilmember Beyer, Boa.rd_member
Sharp and Simpson. Voting No: None. Absent: Boardmembers Pearson and Williams.

The Fire Board meeting adjourned at 6:28 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

City Administrator

Fire Board/April 21, 1993
