I
I
I
'1
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

I
I
I

UPDATE ON HOG FARM
By: Zoning Administrator Sylvia Frolik

Background:

As you recall, an agreement was entered into by the City and Jake Barthold pertaining to the
maintenance of a hog farm in Ramsey. As a result of nuisance odors caused, Mr. Barthold agreed
to relocate the hog farm operation from the City of Ramsey by August 15, 1993.

Observations:

On August 17, two separate inspections of the hog farm site were conducted; one by City Attorney
Goodrich and one by myself and Building Official Glyn Huff.

We all observed that there were no hogs remaining on the property. We also observed that a
commercial cement mixer was in use preparing the recycled food, obviously for pig consumption.
Upon inquiry, Mr. Goodrich was informed that the recycled food preparation will continue at the
Ramsey site temporarily until the steam machine is relocated to the new Barthold pig farm site.
(The steam machine is located within a pole building on the site and provides the means to heat the
food scraps in the cement mixer to a non-contaminant point in preparation for consumption by the
pigs.)

There were some manure and food scrap deposits found on the property, but these materials will
dry up and decompose into the ground.

Recommendation:
Council Action:
For information only.

Review Checklist:

City Administrator
City Attorney
