Volunteer Fire Fighter Dennis
Klotter represented the Truck Committee and presented a very detailed specifications report
on the 3,000 gallon tandem axle tanker. It was noted in the Fire Department specification
documentation that a smaller tank on a single axle chassis would save $8,000 to $10,000
(approximately $7,000 for the chassis with some savings on the tank and installation). It is
estimated that the chassis will be $49,000, lighting at $5,000 and tank and setup under
$40,000. A used chassis was considered at roughly $20,000 to $25,000 with the premise
that it would be changed out in seven to ten years. This was discarded, however, as not
cost effective over the long term.

It was determined that for safety reasons and diversity of training, Council should consider
the extra cost (approximately $6,000) to have the mack equipped with an automatic
transmission. It should be noted that, while not required, the National Transportation
Safety Board highly recommends automatic transmissions for safety reasons. A request
was also made to have a 45 watt versus a 25 watt radio installed in the mack to assist with
better communication.

The Fire Board discussed such report at length and directed that Staff write a memo to
Council regarding the Board's recommendation.

Fire Board Recommendation: That Council authorize the Fire Department to solicit bids for
a 3,000 gallon tanker truck (LNT8000) with automatic transmission and the larger radio.
The estimated cost, at this time, for this truck and equipment is approximately $92,000.
The current 1994 budget document with allocations from 1992/1993 totals $88,002.

The bid specifications are available for your review.

/jmt
