Private industrial water use is distributed <br />among approximately 190 permittees. <br />Small private water supply (domestic) <br />Minnesota statutes establish domestic water use as the highest priority of the state's water when <br />supplies are limited (Minn. Stat., Sec. 103G.261). <br />Slightly less than 10% of the region's population draws their drinking water from tens of thousands of <br />private wells. While water use data is limited, the amount of water supplied by private domestic wells <br />can be estimated by assuming that the population of the seven -county metro area that is not served <br />by public water supply systems uses an average of 75 gallons per person per day. The result is an <br />estimate of approximately 16 million gallons per day supplied by private domestic wells. <br />The most commonly used source of water for domestic private supplies is groundwater; it is more <br />widespread and usually safe to drink with minimal or no treatment. Private well owners are responsible <br />for testing water quality, taking action to prevent contamination at the wellhead or intake, and <br />planning for back-up supplies in case of emergency. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) is an <br />important resource in these efforts. <br />Water use is growing - future water use <br />The amount of water used has changed over time, but municipal water use is the largest and has <br />grown faster than any other water use category in the metro area. The other water use categories <br />show various historical trends, although the quantities are not large compared to public supply. <br />As the region's population and economy continue to grow, regional water use is expected to grow as <br />well. While water demand projections are not precise, simplifying assumptions can be made to <br />estimate a reasonable range for future water demand. <br />Figure 10.
