- 4 - Oberstar

Dr. Moriarty: Concerned about water to convert energy from lignite
coa 1. We need fresh water for the protection of food. Mr. Ober-
star is disturbed very much about moving fresh water from one area
to another.

MiSs Lehn: Because Lake Superior is international, could this fact
be used to stop Reserve Mining from dumping i~nto the lake? Mr.
Oberstar said no to this. He also said they have one year to con-
trol the stacking machines from the plant. They are putting in a
$30,000,000 control program for pollution, and $242,000,000 for on
land disposal. It amounts to the cost of a whole new taconite
plant. Reserve Mining has 3,000 employees. The surrounding towns
depend on Reserve Nining for employment. If Grant Nerritt would
have settled down 5 years ago, this could have been taken care of
then.

Why can't we hold the lever of food over the Arabs for the oil
costs?

Mr. Oberstar: They can convert and adapt much more easily than we
can on the use of the oil.

How much excess oil profits are the oil companies making?

Are we going to see some honest reporting?

Mr. Oberstar: The Federal Trade Commission has smacked 6 oil
companies that overcharged utility companies to the tune of $600,
OOO,O00. Mr. Oberstar has legislation prepared for a government
agency that would handle all imports of oil to this country.

Lehn: Are we still giving foreign aid to the countries that are
holding us up on the oil imports?

Mr. Oberstar: thinks we have an economic mission to Iran.
Arabia has not received 2oreign aid from ~.'.us.

Saudia

Meeting closed at 10:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Clerk
