SERVICES
<br />As a public service division, Metropolitan
<br />Council Environmental Services (MCES) treats
<br />approximately 250 million gallons of wastewater
<br />daily (MGD) at eight regional treatment plants.
<br />MCES operates approximately 610 miles of
<br />regional sewers that collect flow from more
<br />than 5,000 miles of sewers owned by the 108
<br />communities that are connected to the
<br />Metropolitan Disposal System (MDS). The
<br />MDS serves about 95% of the population in
<br />the seven -county metropolitan area.
<br />Wastewater System Operated and Maintain
<br />by Environmental Services
<br />MCES continues near -perfect compliance
<br />with both federal and state clean water
<br />standards and data requirements, with six
<br />plants maintaining award winning 100%
<br />compliance for more than five years (two of
<br />those for more than 20 years).
<br />MCES meets these standards while holding
<br />wastewater service rates 40% below the
<br />national average for similar -sized utilities. The
<br />most recent financial survey by the National
<br />Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA)
<br />shows that, among reporting peer agencies,
<br />the Twin Cities area has the fifth lowest average
<br />retail sewer cost per household.
