(Ford Brook Estates)

I
I
I
I
I

Dear Lloyd:

As requested, we have reviewed the above referenced drainage -
problem. This problem resulted from spring runoff and heavy rains
last fall causing partial flooding of Block 9 in Ford Brook
Estates. Due to this flooding, the homes in Block 9 experienced
on-site wastewater disposal problems. To alleviate this problem,
the homeowners would like to have the City ditch the low land to
provide better drainage to Ford Brook.

In review of the Flood Insurance Study completed by the U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development, we found that the
problem area lies within the floodway of Ford Brook. The 10 year
flood is approximately two feet above the low area in Block 9 and
the 100 year flood is approximately 5 feet above the low area.

I
I
I
I
I

A brief survey of the area shows that there is minimal fall (less
than one foot) between the low area in Block 9 and the bank of
Ford Brook. The survey also shows that the present level of Ford
Brook is 1.8 feet below the standing water on Block 9. However,
we would not recommend cutting the bank of Ford Brook to drain the
wet land since any rise in the water level of Ford Brook would
.cause water to flow into the low area.

A possible solution to the problem would be to fill the low area
on Block 9.provided the DNR grants a permit. Minimal grading
could also be done to assure that there is a positive gradient to
Ford Brook. Another solution to the on-site wastewater disposal
problem would be to construct mound systems.

I

civil · municipal · planning · soils · land sur~eyb~g
