I
I
I
I
I

Sovordh Shoot cond Robed Stteel
Saint Paul, M~nne~ta 55101

lelephone [612} 291-6453

Office'of fhe Chairman

December 1981

TO: Local Governmental Officials and Concerned Citizens

At the direction of the Minnesota Legislature, the seven Metropolitan Area
counties and the Metropolitan Council have been working together to find
suitable locations for new sanitary landfills in the Region.

The Council and the counties are also trying to develop programs to reduce, or
abate, the amount of waste buried in landfills. If successfully implemented,
abatement programs could substantially reduce the need for future landfill
capacity in the Region.

I
I
I

Even so, there is a serious need for new landfills. The Council estimates that
the Region will run out of landfill capacity by 1986. The questions of
"where," "how many" and "how big" need to be resolved before the first
shovelful of landfill dirt is turned.

To encourage your participation in answering these questions, I am enclosing a
fact sheet, in question-and-answer format, about the landfill siting process
that is now under way. Also enclosed is a summary of the criteria the Council
is using to determine the suitability of the sites.

I
I
i
I
I
I
I
I

The Council has received an inventory of candidate landfill sites from your
county board. The next step is for the Council to review the sites and
determine which ones conform to Council policies.

Before the sites proposed by your county are accepted by the Council, they will
be discussed at a special public meeting to be held in your county. The
meeting will likely be held in Feburary or March 1982.

You will be advised of the date, time and place of the meeting well in advance.
You will also be sent a draft Council report on the candidate sites.

If you would like additional copies of this information packet, call the
Council's Public Information Office at 291-6464.

Sincerely,

Charles R. Weaver
Chairman

Enclosures
CRW/poc
