Why do I raise racing pigeons? I raise them as pets and race them against many other fanciers
in the metro area. I would breed from 10-12 pairs of bird to start with and once the youngs are
about 1 month old I'll start training them. By training 1 mean I train them to learn how to go inside
their home on command. It91 usually takes about 1-2 days for these youngs to understand the
command and go inside when I tell them to. Once they know the command 111 let them out to fly
and call them in when I want to, so they'll never be out all the time. After a month they'll start
flying around the area for an hour not landing anywhere within that time and once they land
they'll land right onto the pigeon loft and I call them inside right away! After they've been flying
for an hour everyday I'II start taking them out to road tosses. Start from 5 air miles all the way up
to 100 air miles to prep them for the races that are 100-400 miles. How I take care of them is I'II
go and clean the pigeon loft 2-3 times a week because 191 want them to be as healthy as they
can be. I would use a scraper and scrape all the pigeon droppings into bags. I have family
members who farm so they use the droppings for fertilizer. They are maintained in a home that
they love and feel safe, so when race day comes they will race for the love of their home. I also
maintain my limits of how many I keep so I can always have an healthy environment for my
family of birds. After race season I would donate the racers to local club for auctions and to
programs to start kids with racing pigeon sport. When they go to auctions, birds are averaged
out to sell for 200-300$. I would like to keep my pigeons in the city of Ramsey and would really
appreciate it as I just recently moved here.
