Certified
organic in 1977 [OGBA], soil health has always been the cornerstone of the Farme's existence.
Over the years of soil stewardship, adding organic matter has been the default remedy for almost
every deficiency. Experience and dedication have made the Farme's soil rich and its crops thrive,
yet the quest to understand soil fertility has only expanded in scope with time.
Important questions include:
How do we characterize this constructed soil?
How do we identify testable indicators of healthy soil quality?
What is the best strategy in restoring the soil quality in degraded habitats?
"The Soil System: Soil Science for a Post -Modern Era" poster is a guide in the quest to
understand the world under our feet. It is the product of a trans -disciplinary effort between
members of the Crandall Garden Farme Soil Committee (see poster for names and affliations),
which spans the scientific to societal implications of a soil system. Designed by Aurora MacRae-
Crerar, this poster illustrates the central three processes that produce soil and puts these
processes within the context of soil health, human culture and the emerging soil science of the
21St century.
The infinite intricacies of the soil system are made up of kaleidoscopic interactions between
physical, chemical and biological processes. Now with meta- omics we are moving into a
new realm of understanding the microscopic living component of soil, the most diverse habitat
on the planet. Such technology increases our awareness of the the plethora of soil quality
indicators and marks the next era of soil exploration. A multitude of perspectives on soil
processes is especially important the face of global warming, as healthy soils can mitigate
climate change through carbon sequestration. Please explore the poster for more perspectives on
the Earth's greatest resource—soil!
Any comments or suggestions on how to use and
improve the poster as an introduction to the soil
system and for educational purposes are welcomed
and much appreciated. Please email: Aurora MacRae-
Crerar, auroramac@gmail.com and/or Bruce Bacon,
bbacon@mtn.org.
11" x 13" prints and a high resolution PDF of the
poster are available for donation or sale to Crandall
Garden Farme, Proceeds will be used towards the
Farme's preservation and 2016 soil test budget.
^_z i,. *.
r..
..,,.
