6701 Highway 10 NW
Ramsey, MN 55303
Phone: 763-421-8530
Fax: 763-421-8960
www.youthist.net
To Ramsey City Council
YOUTH FIRST
COMMUNITY
OF PROMISE
ANDOVER • ANOKA • RAMSEY
Request: Youth First Community of Promise is asking the city of Ramsey to approve a
temporary garden for the 2016 growing season in the lot connected to the 6701 Highway 10
location in order to teach students about cooking with healthy, homegrown foods.
Purpose Narrative: Youth First is a community nonprofit organization offering education
services to underserved students in the Anoka Hennepin School District. At our community
location in Ramsey (6701 Highway 10) we have recently completed construction on a full
kitchen that we intend to utilize in a new cooking curriculum for youth. We view the opportunity
to show young people how to grow and prepare healthy meals as an important and positive life
skill. Working with a population of youth who face food insecurity, limited income and limited
access to healthy options, this garden would be a positive push against those barriers. Our
purpose in this program is to empower our students and their families with the choice to
prioritize their health and wellbeing.
Aesthetic Narrative: The garden will be comprised of (2) wood, raised bed gardens (4ft. x l0ft.
x lft.) surrounded by metal wire garden fencing. This layout was recommended by Master
Gardener Mark Sorteberg with the University of Minnesota Extension. These gardens would be
located in the northwest corner of the lot as recommended by city officials. A compost bin would
be placed next to the gardens. The hose used for watering is attached to the 6701 building's east
side (Sketch and example photos attached).
Thank you very much for your consideration,
Tony Mauren
Youth Program Coordinator
Youth First Community of Promise
Active Partners with:
• Anoka County • City Governments of Andover, Anoka & Ramsey • School District # 1 • Business •
• Faith Based Communities • Civic & community groups •
Youth First Community of Promise operates under the direction and administration of the Northwest Anoka County Community Consortium
