2015 COLLECTIONS
The ACHS Exhibit Hall
The Tell Me a Story exhibit continued to feature a rotating
selection of artifacts and personal interest stories. One of the
most significant artifacts on display this year was a section of ,
wall from the Dan Law's Barbeque with a painted mural of Dan
at his grill(right). This piece came to the ACHS from the City of
Ramsey and has proven useful in the creation of a QCTV
episode discussing not only the story of a local business and its
highly respected owner, but also the conservation needs of
collection items.
The 3D collection
held by a museum T
ought to create
points of resonance
with visitors,tell a
story,and preserve
an obsolete way of
life. The wire grass harvested by the Crex Carpet Company in
the early 1900s,and the ensuing rugs and furniture built from it,
stand as a perfect example. While we know a good deal about
the company and its operations in Columbus,ACHS did not
have anything made from this grass until November of 2015
when Christian and Susan Cold offered us their yard sale find.
Personal memory of an object and its attachment to place also
help to determine what we include in the exhibit hall.By
showcasing artifacts of significance to the community they
originate in,like the grandfather clock from the Weaver family
that once stood in the Woodbury House,ACHS can tell more
than one story at a time.In this particular case, museum patrons
also experience its musical chimes marking the passing of time.
The Tell Me a Story exhibit will close in 2016 to provide space
for the conversation surrounding Suburbanization.Within this topic,we can
explore the growth and change of Anoka County in housing, schools, and
transportation, the shift of perception and ideas, technology and medicine,as
well as the creation of clubs and social organizations.
I had great questions and an amazing response from students
when I gave our Civil War programs at Anoka Middle
School.I learned from the teacher afterwards that for one of
the students, it was his first question all year. We hooked him
with history!
Vielde Wendel,Program Manager
3
