PW CASE

REVIEW MN/DOT PROPOSED CLOSURE OF MEDIAN CROSSINGS
ON HIGHWAY 10/169
By: Leonard Linton, Civil Engineer

Background:

Mn/DOT has released plans for the 2005 overlay projects. Highway 10/169 through
Ramsey is on the list. They are proposing to close the following median crossings between
signals:

· Tungsten Street
· Feldspar Street
· Llama Street
· Midway between Traprock Street and Armstrong Boulevard
· The crossing west of Beatty Street
· The crossing at the west end of the weigh station

Observations:

Several of the crossings were the.scene for traffic accidents as noted below:

Tungsten Street 4
Feldspar Street 7
West of Traprock 1
Llama Street
West of Beatty Street 0
West of Weigh Station 0

Source: Mn/Dot Period 1/1/00- 12/31/02

The proposal does not close all of the median crossings, Staff views tiffs as a logical first
step towards turning Highway 10 into a Freeway through Ramsey. RighMn, fight-out
access will be maintained to the properties adjacent to these median closures. Some
businesses may not have the direct access they had in the past, however the benefits fi.om
the reduction in the number of median crossings and turning movements across traffic will
outweigh the inconvenience.

Recommendation:

Staff supports the closure of these median crossings as discUssed above. 'We suggest
Mn/DOT host an open house to present this to the public.

43
