ELECTION SIGNS

Placement of Election signs

Political' signs posted by a candidate for political office, or by a person or group promoting a political
issue or a political candidate may be placed in any district. Political signs are limited to thirty-two (32)
square feet in area and such signs shall be removed within (7) days following the election. [Ramsey City
Code 9.12]

State law specifies that signs can only be located on private property adjacent to a roadway with
permission of the property owner. They shall not be placed within 15 feet of a driveway. The sig-n shall
not distract drivers nor offer any confusion to any street, highway, sign, or.any traffic sign or signal-.
Signs cannot be within 100 feet of the front door of a polling place. Sign placement shall conform to the
sight triangle ordinance adopted by the city. This ordinance prohibits placement of objects within a'
triangular area at street intersections where the vision of drivers approaching the intersection may be
blocked by the object.

City, State, and County all maintain a roadside easement on all of their public roads. Signs need to be
located at least 15 feet from the back of curb or the edge of the roadway to be out of the easement on city
streets. State and County roads are generally much larger and candidates should contact those agencies
for their guidelines as far as sign placement is concerned.

Be extremely aware of underground utilities when pounding in signs. Utility depth may vary from
location to location and there is no guarantee they will be buried at the proper depth: The safest way to
determine utility location is to call Gopher State One Call for locates. Their number is 651.454.0002.
This is a free service available to anyone who requests it.

Signs placed in the right-of-way will be removed without notice by City staff. Signs that are removed
will be taken to the Public Works facility located at 14100 Jaspar Street NW. All election signs
remaining at the Public Works facility seven days after the election will be disposed of.

51
