NORTHERN MAYORS' ASSOCIATION

~985
- . . ~r~,o.,ze~ .

' October 22, 1987

Dear Northern Mayors' Association Member:

The Northern Mayors' Association Metro Resorts Task Force is developing a
list of possible sites for a Twin Cities' Metro Resort. As a result, we
'are soliciting site proposals (one site per city) from member cities that
meet the site criteria listed below.

PRO3EC~ DESCRIPTION

A Twin Cities' Metro Resort would be a hotel/motel meeting center that
combines resort amenities with first-class meeting space and easy access to
downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul as well as Twin Cities' International
Airport. Currently there is no such facility in the Twin Cities
metropolitan area.

Businesses, therefore, cannot have meetings in a resort setting without
traveling at least two hours nortb~ They can meet in either downtown, but
if participants want to play golf or fish, at least two hours of travel
time must be added. In addition, families that want to get away for a
weekend can stay at a hotel downtown or on the 1-494 strip, but there is
limited indoor recreation (pool and video games) and no outdoor activities.

A first-class resort that combines a health club, cinema, bowling alley,
bank, municipal building, shopping center, et~, would help the northern
suburbs become more. attractive for corporate campuses and upscale
retailing. It would serve as the anchor for new office develoi~nent and a
new business image for the region.

Metropolitan resorts are rare. The Four Seasons Hotels Ltd. (Canada) has
developed such facilities in Toronto, Houston, and London. The Toronto Inn
on the Park has almost 600 rooms. It is about 15 minutes from downtown and
30 minutes from the airport. It is adjacent to a regional park and garden.
Metropolitan resorts have also been developed by the Marriott and Radisson
hotel corporations. Marriott's resort in Lincolnwood, (a first-class
suburb of Chicago) includes a dinner theater and golf course. Radisson has
recently opened a beach front facility near Los Angeles which includes a
nine-hole golf course.

-- A COALITION ADVOCATING BALANCED METROPOLITAN GROWTH --
